Seumas McNally Grand Prize and Nuovo Award: Betrayal at Club Low (Cosmo D Studios)
Cosmo D Studios’ Betrayal At Club Low stole the spotlight at the 25th annual Independent Games Festival Awards by winning the Seumas McNally Grand Prize for Best Independent Game. The indie-tabletop-inspired RPG is set in a former coffin factory-turned-nightclub where players take on the role of an undercover agent trying to rescue a colleague. With multiple ways to approach each undercover mission, Betrayal At Club Low offers players dice-driven gameplay and tense decision-making with consequences at every turn.
The Nuovo Award, which honors titles that make the awards jurors think differently about games as a medium, was also won by Betrayal At Club Low, making it the second game in the IGF Awards history to win both awards in the same year, alongside Richard Hoffmeier’s Cart Life.
The outstanding reception of Betrayal At Club Low at the IGF Awards shows that incorporating real-world situations like gambling, along with novel game design can create a unique and immersive gameplay experience. This could be a helpful tip for game developers looking to create standout games in a crowded market.
